Script to Screen - A Student's review

Earlier this year, Year 10 Student Grace attended a careers trip to Salford University where she took part in a Script to Screen workshop. Grace has kindly shared her experience with us below.

Throughout my time on script to screen, I did a variety of activities including: being an actor, character development, rehearsing scripts, filming scenes from the script and stage combat.

On my first day, I was really nervous because I didn’t know what to expect, and I was the only one from Co-op Academy Walkden. When I arrived at Salford University, the first thing we did was an icebreaker. This was a good start to the first day as it got me to speak to new people and got me out of my comfort zone.

One of the main activities I enjoyed was rehearsing the script and filming the scene afterwards. The scene we rehearsed was about following your own path and resisting peer pressure. I really enjoyed this, because we worked as a team, learnt some new skills, gained confidence and everyone I was surrounded with was very like-minded.

An area which I have never experienced before was stage combat. This involved learning how to safely perform: punching, kicking, hair pulling and choking. This was an interesting experience for me because I’ve learnt a new skill which has changed the way I watch fight scenes on TV.

Overall, this experience has taught me to believe in myself, try new things as they can lead to great opportunities, learn about different areas of media I didn’t know existed and meet new people from the profession. This has helped me get a good understanding of the different career paths I could potentially take when I leave school.
