Letters from Principal
Letter from the Principal
It’s the end of the first full week at the Academy and it’s nice to be able to report how well our students have settled into their daily routines. Our Year 7 students have settled incredibly well and are firmly part of the furniture already! The step up from Primary school is a big one. They have managed it exceptionally well, with the support of Miss Rogers, their form tutors and of course their parents – thank you.
Parents’ Evenings and Meet the Principal
Here are the dates of the parents’ evenings for this academic year:
Year 7 13th February 2020
Year 8 9th January 2020
Year 9 5th March 2020
Year 10 2nd April 2020
Year 11 12th December 2019
In addition, I would like to give parents and carers the opportunity to meet with me over the coming weeks.
There will be three meetings – one for parents of Year 7 students, one for Year 8, 9 and 10 and a separate meeting for Year 11 parents. The Year 7 Meeting will also be an opportunity to meet with form tutors so that you can find out how your children are settling and pass on any information you feel it’s important for them to know. The Year 11 meeting will be part of our ‘supporting exam success’ evening and both this and the Year 7 event will take place on Thursday 3rd October. Further details of these will be published via MyEd.
These meetings will enable you to hear about my vision for the academy, ask any questions and offer any positive suggestions for improvement. In the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact us should you need further information. You can email on – firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Academy website will be updated over the coming weeks so that all information is relevant and accurate. This is quite an undertaking, so please bear with us in the meantime.
Standards and expectations
I am happy to report that standards of uniform at Walkden continues to be very high. I have been very pleased to see that jewellery has been kept to the simple pair of gold or silver studs as requested last week. Thank you to all of our parents and carers for your continued support with this.
Bikes on site
Last week I mentioned that bikes should be dismounted before entering the pedestrian area at the front of the academy. Again, students have adjusted to this simple change well. Both the entry and exit to the Academy building is very safe and calm as a result. Additionally, I am considering how transport of students to the Academy affects where they enter and exit the site.It is very important to me that students are able to arrive and leave both efficiently and safely. I will update you on this in the coming weeks.
Whole academy attendance is currently 95.6%, which is pleasing at this stage. I must remind parents that good attendance is so important. If your child is not in, they can’t learn. Please try to make medical or other appointments outside of the Academy day and only keep your child at home if they are genuinely ill and unable to study. If they are going to be absent, please ensure this is reported to the attendance team at the earliest possibility. I fully intend to ensure that good attendance is promoted through our rewards system and we will start with prize draws for great attendance in assemblies next week.
It is fantastic to see so many extra curricular clubs and activities going on around the Academy. I am really pleased to see how many of our students are getting involved with them. They give them experiences outside of the classroom which will build their wider skills, which are so important for their future success.
There are a wide range of clubs and extracurricular activities, such as our Combined Cadet Force, Dance, Handball and Spanish Club. There really is something for everyone, so please do encourage your son/daughter to get involved.
We will try to get as much information out on our social media about clubs and we will be looking to update a section on our website with all of the information on too.
Best wishes for a great weekend
